Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa: Requirements And How To Apply

Cyprus runs a Digital Nomad Visa scheme for people from outside the EU and EEA who work remotely for employers or clients based abroad. It is a residence permit, not a work permit for the Cyprus market. You keep working for your existing employer or your own foreign clients, and you live in Cyprus while you do it.

Who can apply

You qualify if you are a third-country national (not an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen) and you fall into one of two groups:

• You are employed by a company registered outside Cyprus and you can do that job remotely, using telecommunications technology.
• You are self-employed or you run your own business, and your clients are based outside Cyprus.

You cannot work for a Cyprus-based employer or provide services to Cyprus-based clients on this visa. Your spouse or partner and any minor children can join you, but they are not allowed to take up employment or run a business in Cyprus while they hold a dependent permit.

Income requirement

You need a net monthly income of at least €3,500, after tax and social contributions are deducted. This is the figure the Civil Registry and Migration Department checks against your bank statements and employment or client contracts.

If you are bringing family, the threshold goes up: add 20% of the base amount for a spouse or partner, and 15% for each minor child. So a digital nomad moving with a partner and one child needs to show net monthly income of roughly €3,500 + 20% + 15%, which works out to about €4,725.

You prove this with six months of bank statements plus your employment contract, or, if you’re self-employed, your contracts with foreign clients and evidence of business income.

Required documents

Expect to gather:

• A completed application to the Civil Registry and Migration Department
• Valid passport, with at least three months left before expiry, and a copy of the page showing your last entry into Cyprus
• Employment contract, or company registration and client contracts if you’re self-employed
• Six months of bank statements and salary slips showing you meet the income threshold
• A criminal record certificate from your country of origin and any country you’ve lived in recently, issued within the last six months
• Health insurance covering inpatient and outpatient care in Cyprus
• Medical test results, including a blood test and a chest X-ray for tuberculosis screening
• Proof of accommodation in Cyprus: a rental agreement or title deed
• A letter of intent and a CV
• A signed statement that you will not work for a Cyprus-based employer or provide services to Cyprus-based clients

Any documents issued abroad usually need official translation and certification before you submit them.

How to apply

1. Enter Cyprus, typically on a tourist visa or visa-free entry if your nationality allows it.
2. Submit your application to the Civil Registry and Migration Department within three months of arriving. You can remain in Cyprus while the application is processed.
3. Attend an appointment to give biometric data: photo, fingerprints, and signature.
4. Pay the application fees.
5. Wait for processing, which normally takes 5 to 7 weeks.
6. Collect your residence permit card in person once it’s approved.

Costs and fees

Budget €70 for the residence permit application, plus a one-time €70 fee for registration with the Aliens’ Registry. Each family member applying alongside you pays these fees separately. These are the government fees only; translation, certification, medical tests, and health insurance are separate costs you arrange yourself.

Permit duration and renewal

The initial permit is valid for one year. You can renew it for up to two more years, for a maximum stay of three years under this scheme. Submit your renewal application at least a month before your current permit expires. Renewal documentation is lighter than the initial application: you mainly need to update your passport, proof of income, health insurance, and accommodation, and only resubmit employment or business documents if something has changed.

How many permits are available

The scheme has a cap on the number of permits issued. The cap was originally 500. In March 2025 the government added another 500, bringing the total to 1,000. Once the cap fills, new applications are held until the government raises it again or a new allocation period opens, so it’s worth checking current availability before you plan your move.

Taxes for Cyprus digital nomad visa holders

Spending more than 183 days in Cyprus in a calendar year makes you a Cyprus tax resident, as long as you aren’t also tax resident somewhere else. Cyprus tax residents who qualify for non-domiciled status get an exemption from tax on dividends and interest for 17 years. Your specific tax position depends on your income type and your home country’s tax treaty with Cyprus, so get advice from a Cyprus accountant before you rely on any of this for your own filing.

FAQ

Can EU citizens apply for the Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa? No. The scheme is for third-country nationals only. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens already have the right to live and work in Cyprus and don’t need this permit.

Can I bring my family with me? Yes. Your spouse or partner and minor children can get dependent residence permits alongside your application. They cannot work or run a business in Cyprus while on a dependent permit.

Does the Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa lead to permanent residency or citizenship? The visa itself is capped at three years and does not by itself count toward Cyprus’s permanent residency or citizenship routes. Check with an immigration lawyer if long-term settlement is your goal, since those routes have separate requirements.

Can I work for a Cyprus company while on this visa? No. You have to sign a statement confirming you will not work for a Cyprus-based employer or take on Cyprus-based clients. The entire point of the scheme is remote work for employers or clients outside Cyprus.

What happens if the permit quota is full when I want to apply? You wait. The scheme has a fixed cap on permits, currently 1,000 after the March 2025 increase. When the cap is reached, the Migration Department stops accepting new applications until more slots open.

How long does approval take? Processing typically takes 5 to 7 weeks from submission, based on current law firm reporting. You can stay in Cyprus while your application is being processed.
