What the Estonia Digital Nomad Visa is

Estonia was one of the first countries in Europe to create a visa specifically for remote workers. It lets you live in Estonia for up to a year while you keep working for an employer or clients based outside the country. It is not a residence permit and it does not lead to permanent residence. It is a visa, and when it expires you leave or reapply.

Income requirement

You need to show a net monthly income of at least €4,500 for the six months before you apply. This is verified against your bank statements, so the money has to have actually landed in your account, not just appear on a contract.

If you are employed, this usually means payslips and statements. If you run your own company or freelance, you show your business bank statements and tax records instead. Estonia checks the six months immediately before your application, so a good month here or there will not save an average that falls short.

Eligibility

You qualify if you meet all of the following:

• You are at least 18 years old.
• You are not a citizen of the EU, EEA, or Switzerland (those citizens do not need this visa).
• You work independently of location, using a phone, laptop, or similar technology.
• You fit one of three categories: you have an employment contract with a company registered outside Estonia, you own or hold shares in a business registered outside Estonia, or you work as a freelancer for clients mostly based outside Estonia.
• You meet the €4,500 net monthly income threshold above.

Russian and Belarusian citizens are currently excluded from applying for this visa.

Required documents

Standard visa documents

• Valid passport, issued within the last 10 years and valid at least three months past your planned departure
• Completed and signed visa application form
• One recent color photo (35x45mm, meeting ICAO standards)
• Travel medical insurance with minimum coverage of €30,000
• Proof of accommodation in Estonia
• Bank statements covering the required period, stamped by your bank

Digital nomad specific documents

• A written explanation of why you want to use the visa for teleworking
• A written confirmation from your employer that your job can be done remotely (if employed)
• Your employment contract or service agreement
• Six months of bank statements showing your income and, where applicable, tax and social security payments
• A certificate from your company’s home jurisdiction confirming its registration, if you own or work for a foreign company
• Your CV

Indian citizens can submit ITR-V forms or income tax acknowledgements for the last two assessment years instead of standard salary documentation.

How to apply

1. Book an appointment at your nearest Estonian embassy or consulate through broneering.mfa.ee. If there’s no Estonian mission in your country, you may be able to apply through a partner embassy or VFS Global office.
2. Gather your documents, including the teleworking-specific ones above, and get any foreign documents apostilled or notarized and translated.
3. Attend your appointment in person. You’ll submit your documents, pay the fee, and give biometric data (fingerprints), except for children under 12.
4. Wait for a decision. Processing takes up to 30 days.
5. Collect your visa once approved, or arrange for it to be sent to you depending on the embassy’s process.

You can apply for either a C-visa (short-stay, up to 90 days) or a D-visa (long-stay, up to a year) depending on how long you plan to stay. Most digital nomads apply for the D-visa since it covers the full year.

Costs and fees

• D-visa (long-stay, up to 1 year): €120
• C-visa (short-stay, up to 90 days): €90
• Children aged 6 to 11: €60
• Children under 6: no fee

These are state fees paid at the time of application and are non-refundable if your application is rejected.

Permit duration and renewal

The visa is valid for up to 365 days within a 12-month period. It cannot be renewed or extended from inside Estonia. If you want to stay longer, you reapply from scratch, including proving the income threshold again for the six months before the new application.

There’s also a cap on how long you can stay on this type of visa over time: no more than 548 days within any 730 consecutive days. If you plan to use Estonia as a long-term base, factor that limit into your plans rather than assuming back-to-back renewals will work indefinitely.

FAQ

Do I need to pay Estonian tax while on this visa? Tax residency in Estonia depends on how many days you spend in the country, not on which visa you hold. If you spend more than 183 days in Estonia in a 12-month period, you generally become an Estonian tax resident. Check your specific situation with a tax advisor before you commit to a long stay.

Can my spouse or children join me? The digital nomad visa is issued to you as the applicant. Family members need to apply for their own visas and typically need to show their own supporting documents, such as proof of the relationship and sufficient funds.

What happens if my income drops below €4,500 partway through the year? The threshold is checked at the point of application, based on the six months before you apply. There’s no ongoing income check built into the visa itself, but you’ll need to meet the threshold again if you reapply.

Is the digital nomad visa the same as e-Residency? No. e-Residency lets you register and run an Estonian company online from anywhere in the world. It does not give you the right to live in Estonia. The digital nomad visa is a physical travel visa that lets you live in the country. Many people combine the two, but they solve different problems.

Can I switch from a C-visa to a D-visa while in Estonia? No. If you want the longer stay, apply for the D-visa from the start. Switching visa types generally requires a fresh application from outside Estonia.

Are Russian or Belarusian citizens eligible? No. As of this writing, Estonia does not accept digital nomad visa applications from Russian or Belarusian citizens.
