Hungary White Card Digital Nomad Visa: Requirements And How To Apply

What the White Card is

The White Card is Hungary’s residence permit for remote workers and business owners who earn their income outside the country. It is not a tourist visa and not a path to permanent residence or citizenship. It lets you live in Hungary for up to a year, with one renewal, while you keep working for an employer or clients based elsewhere.

The National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (OIF) runs the program. You cannot switch from the White Card into another residence permit type, and you cannot use it to work for a Hungarian company or hold shares in one.

Income requirement

You need a net monthly income of at least €3,000, earned from outside Hungary, for the six months before you apply. This has to hold throughout your stay, not just at the point of application.

You prove it with bank statements from the last six months, or with an employer certificate or tax authority document confirming your earnings. If you own a business abroad, you show that the company operates for real, that it turns a profit, and what your role and ownership stake are.

Eligibility

You qualify if you meet all of these conditions:

• You are a third-country national. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens do not need this permit.
• You have a verified employment relationship with a company outside Hungary and do your work from Hungary using a laptop or similar technology, or you own a share in a profitable company based outside Hungary.
• You meet the €3,000 net monthly income threshold.
• You do not carry out gainful activity in Hungary and do not hold shares in a Hungarian company.
• You do not already qualify for another Hungarian residence permit category, such as guest self-employment, investor, or standard employment.
• You are not in the middle of a refugee or subsidiary protection procedure, do not hold tolerated status, and are not arriving as an intra-corporate transferee or highly qualified worker under those separate schemes.

Required documents

• Valid passport, with a full copy of every page
• A certified statement from your employer covering your job duties, confirming the role can be done remotely, or, if you own the business, documents showing the company’s real operations, your ownership stake, and your position in it
• Six months of bank statements, or an employer or tax authority certificate confirming your income
• Proof of accommodation in Hungary: a lease, a letter from whoever is hosting you, proof of ownership, or a booking confirmation
• Proof of comprehensive health insurance, or evidence you can cover healthcare costs yourself
• A return ticket or proof of funds for onward travel
• A recent passport-style photo
• Fingerprints, taken at your appointment, for applicants over 6 years old

Get any foreign documents translated into Hungarian or English, and certified where needed, before your appointment.

How to apply

1. Confirm you don’t already qualify for a different residence permit category, since the White Card is only available if you don’t.
2. Gather your documents, including six months of bank statements and your employer or business ownership evidence.
3. Book an appointment at a Hungarian embassy or consulate in your country of nationality or habitual residence. Some countries route this through honorary consuls or an external service provider.
4. Submit your application in person. You’ll hand over your documents, pay the fee, and give your fingerprints and photo.
5. Wait for a decision. Standard processing takes around 21 days, with a legal maximum of 30 days from submission, not counting time spent on any requests for extra documents.
6. Once approved, you receive a D visa that lets you enter Hungary and collect your White Card.
7. After you arrive, register your address with the local authorities.

If you’re a citizen of a visa-free country and already in Hungary, you may be able to apply in-country through the Enter Hungary platform or in person at your regional directorate instead of through an embassy.

Costs and fees

• Application fee at an embassy or consulate: €110
• In-person application within Hungary: HUF 39,000
• Online application via Enter Hungary: HUF 24,000
• Appeal fee, if your application is refused and you contest it: HUF 47,000 (about €160)

Health insurance and document translation costs come on top of these and depend on your provider and how many documents need translating.

Permit duration and renewal

The White Card is valid for up to one year and can be extended once for one more year, for a maximum of two years total. You cannot renew it a second time. When the two years are up, you leave Hungary or apply for a different residence category if you qualify for one.

To renew, you need to have spent at least 90 days in Hungary within any 180-day period on your current permit, and you apply no earlier than 90 days and no later than 30 days before it expires.

Tax residency

If you spend 183 days or more in Hungary within a 12-month period, you generally become a Hungarian tax resident and pay Hungarian income tax, currently 15%, on your worldwide income. Stay under that and you’re less likely to trigger residency, though this depends on your specific situation and any tax treaty between Hungary and your home country. Talk to a tax advisor before you commit to a long stay, especially if your income is taxed at source elsewhere.

FAQ

Can my spouse or children join me on my White Card? No. The White Card is issued to you as the individual applicant. Family members need to apply for their own permits separately, and a spouse applying this way needs to meet the same €3,000 net monthly income requirement independently.

Can I work for a Hungarian company while on a White Card? No. The permit specifically excludes gainful activity in Hungary and holding shares in a Hungarian company. Your income has to come from outside the country.

What happens after my two years are up? You cannot renew the White Card a second time. You either leave Hungary or, if you qualify, switch to a different residence permit category before your current one expires. The White Card itself does not lead to permanent residence or citizenship.

Do I need to already be earning €3,000 a month before I apply, or can I show a lower average? You need to show that net income for the full six months before your application, verified through bank statements or an employer/tax certificate. An average that dips below €3,000 in any of those months is likely to cause problems.
